Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae has officially begun her Miss Possessive world tour just a few months after releasing her third studio album, So Close to What. Only a year after completing the Think Later tour, which covered her second studio album of the same name, McRae has transitioned from small venues to sold-out arenas for this world tour.
The Think Later world tour was an impressive turn of events for Tate McRae. During the European and U.S. legs of her tour, McRae became a viral sensation. The mix of her viral hits, like "greedy" and "run for the hills," combined with her captivating choreography, made her performances electrifying.
"Greedy," released in 2023, skyrocketed McRae’s name on every chart. From the Billboard Hot 100 to Apple Music and Spotify spotlights, and going viral on TikTok, "greedy" was taking over.
Much like "greedy," So Close to What equally rose on the charts, but it became viral so quickly that every song on the album charted. McRae earned her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, while featuring rapper Flo Milli on "bloodonmyhands" and The Kid LAROI on "I Know Love," which helped her reach new heights. Some fan favorites include "Purple Lace Bra," "Like I Do," "Greenlight," and "2 Hands."
The most viral of all, "Revolving Door," both as a song and music video, has generated press and trends that McRae’s music has never seen before. The music video represents her life feeling “like a never-ending revolving door.” At certain points in her life, McRae experienced the same feelings and thoughts over and over, which is reflected in much of her music's lyrics and emotional appeal. The music video highlights McRae’s dance talent, especially through a new TikTok trend inspired by her challenging leg lift at the start. It ends with Tate falling to the ground, sobbing—only to get up and do it all again.
McRae has garnered even more attention after being featured on Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She performed "Sports Car" and "Dear God" on SNL, and "Revolving Door" on The Tonight Show, where she showcased her live vocals and exceptional ability to sing, dance, and deliver an outstanding performance all at once.
She began her world tour at the Lollapalooza events held in Chile and Argentina earlier this year in late March. With the biggest crowds Tate has ever seen—30,000+—each fan sang their hearts out. During her “10:35” performance, where confetti is usually shot into the air, Tate and her backup dancers used water guns to cool off fans in the hot weather, adding to the playful feel of the song.
The setlist, which included Think Later songs like "cut my hair," "exes," and "greedy," also featured songs from her first studio album, i used to think i could fly, such as "hurt my feelings" and "uh oh." However, this is not the official setlist, as her performances in arenas starting in May will include different selections.
"You broke me first,” however, is a staple song that will always remain on Tate McRae’s setlists. As she rose to fame at 17 after posting this original single on YouTube in 2020, fans—both new and old—sing with fervor to the emotional song about an ex-boyfriend.
As her tour extends into the United States, I’m excited to see what new elements this rising pop star, Tate McRae, will showcase through Miss Possessive, especially compared to her Think Later tour, when she performs at TD Garden in late August!
